In particular, the Multilateral Fund’s (MLF) commitment to protecting the ozone layer is instrumental in preventing millions of cases of skin cancer and cataracts (SDG 3 Good Health and Well-being) as well as safeguarding fisheries and agriculture from UV damage, thereby bolstering food security (SDG 2 Zero Hunger). Additionally, fair access to training programs and the shift to non-ODS alternatives promote gender-balanced employment opportunities and sustainable industries (SDG 5 Gender Equality; SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth; SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities) while contributing directly to poverty reduction (SDG 1 No Poverty).

Moreover, the phase down of greenhouse gases under MLF’s guidance plays a crucial role in averting extreme weather events, protecting lives and ecosystems (SDG 13 Climate Action; SDG 15 Life on Land) and saving trillions of dollars in recovery costs caused by climate-related catastrophes.

SDG1

No poverty

In close collaboration with its partners, the Multilateral Fund has invested billions of dollars in targeted ozone-recovery projects over the past thirty years. Through the establishment of national ozone offices, development of regulatory frameworks, advancement of energy-efficient technologies, and training of technicians and customs officers, the Fund has helped developing countries around the world dramatically decrease the consumption and trade of ODS.

sdg2

SDG2

Zero hunger

The MLF plays a crucial role in ensuring global food security by protecting vital agricultural resources and fisheries from harmful UV rays and reducing HFCs that exacerbate global warming, mitigating the impact of extreme weather events like floods and droughts on food systems.

sdg3

SDG3

Good health and well-being

By protecting the ozone layer, the MLF contributes to the prevention of up to two million cases of skin cancer and millions of cases of cataracts each year by up to 2030.

sdg4

SDG4

Quality education

MLF-supported projects provide specialised training to technicians and enforcement officers in Article 5 countries. Scaling up learning improves individuals’ standard of living and builds more sustainable communities.

sdg7

SDG7

Affordable and clean energy

The MLF’s commitment to the Kigali Amendment is leading the shift towards low global warming coolants while stimulating advancements in energy efficiency in the refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump sectors.

sdg8

SDG8

Decent work and economic growth

The MLF supports the transition to greener technologies in Article 5 countries and provides specialised training, helping create safer working environments, opening new markets for sustainable products, and creating jobs founded on innovative solutions to environmental challenges.

sdg9

SDG9

Industry, innovation and infrastructure

Innovative products and technology introduced by Article 5 countries with support from MLF have successfully eliminated ODS. MLF’s work has also enabled developing countries to sustain their national manufacturing capacity, transition to non-ODS alternatives, and ensure employment in sectors such as refrigeration, air-conditioning and agriculture.

sdg10

SDG10

Reduced inequalities

Financial and technical support provided by MLF in Article 5 countries ensures developing nations are able to achieve their Montreal Protocol targets. Equality is also shown in the composition of MLF’s Executive Committee, where seven of the fourteen members are from Article 5 countries.

sdg11

SDG11

Sustainable cities and communities

Projects implemented by MLF support the development of safe, sustainable and affordable refrigeration and air-conditioning required by cities as well as the collection, transport and disposal of unwanted controlled substances.

sdg12

SDG12

Responsible consumption and production

The phase out of ODS in Article 5 countries and introduction of more sustainable alternatives and technologies has contributed to the environmentally sound management of chemicals and waste and more efficient production processes.

SDG 13

SDG13

Climate action

Emissions avoided by eliminating ODS and reducing HFCs help mitigate global warming, saving trillions of dollars in recovery efforts by averting climate-related disasters like heatwaves, floods, wildfires and droughts.

sdg14

SDG14

Life below water

By reducing harmful UV radiation, MLF’s ozone-replenishing initiatives safeguard aquatic life, vital resources and food systems that economies rely on.

sdg15

SDG15

Life on land

The preservation of the ozone layer helps protect biodiversity and terrestrial ecosystems that sustain clean air and water and nurture crop pollination.

sdg17

SDG17

Partnership for the goals

Under MLF’s leadership, developed and developing countries work in partnership to protect the ozone layer and mitigate climate change through the sharing of knowledge, expertise, technology and financial resources.
